When these sets were issued no one could have anticipated that it would be the last year of production for the Franklin silver half dollar. That series was scheduled to continue at least through 1972. But after the 1963 assassination of President Kennedy, it was supplanted by the new JFK type. Many of both the proof and the mint sets, which contain some of the final 90% coinage produced for circulation, have been broken up over the years for these historic end-of-an-era specimens.
