The production of British hammered coins began around 600 CE and continued until the mid 1600s – from the time of Anglo-Saxons to the House of Stuart. Featuring the reigning monarch of the period, these fascinating coins were painstakingly made one at a time by placing a blank planchet of silver between two dies. The upper die was then struck with a hammer to produce the image. Due to the crude method of manufacture, size and shape will vary.
