Product Description
This unusal coin was issued to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower's completion. Known as la dame de fer — the Iron Lady — the now permanent Parisian landmark was erected in 1889 expressly for the World's Fair and was to be dismantled after two decades. When finished, the wrought-iron lattice tower reached a staggering height of 1,083 feet, becoming the tallest man-made structure in the world — a title the Iron Lady would hold until the construction of New York City's Chrysler Building 41 years later. Struck by the Pobjoy Mint in nickel silver (an alloy that does not actually contain silver), the coin's engraving expertly highlights the tower's intricate girders. Elizabeth II obverse.
