Authentic bronze coin depicting the "father of Christmas," Roman Emperor Aurelian (270-275 AD). In ancient Roman times, the winter solstice was a time of celebration. While under Emperor Aurelian's reign in 274 AD, the winter solstice fell on the 25th of December, which he proclaimed as a new pagan holiday. Christianity had not yet been accepted by most Romans, therefore, early Christians adopted the solstice to celebrate the birth of Christ and avoid detection.
