Because of its consistency, the Spanish dollar was widely used by many countries as the first international currency. In 1775, the Continental Congress declared the Spanish 8-reales or 8-bit dollar legal tender for the new nation and by extension the fractional reales as well. Minted under Spanish rule in New Spain, these silver coins remained legal in the U.S. until 1857 and circulated through the Civil War.
