Minted in New Spain, these silver coins remained legal in the U.S. until 1857 but continued to circulate through the Civil War. Struck from 1732 to 1772, the Pillar type varies in design. Mexico 1825-1872 Cap & Rays Silver 2 Reales, For decades, these silver coins struck by the Mexico Mint were used as legal tender in the United States and continued to circulate informally, especially in the South and West. The Mexican coat of arms is displayed on the obverse of the coin. On its reverse, the bold Cap and Rays design adopted the Phrygian cap, a symbol of liberty used on many early U.S. coins.
