This first-year 1878 seven- tail feather Philadelphia Mint issue replaced the original eight-tail feather eagle reverse. The change resulted from an ornithologist's complaint to the Mint that eagles invariably have odd-numbered tail feathers. All later Morgan issues displayed seven tail feathers, but this first variety became relatively scarce when its flat-breast eagle was altered to a round-breast type later in 1878. The flat-breast eagle was not repeated until the last issue of 1921. Lightly circulated Extra Fine quality.
