The first Indian Head penny was minted in 1859, coming in hot on the heels (or wings?) of the avant-garde, but not-so-successful and short-lived Flying Eagle cent. As only the second small type of cent issued, the Indian Head underwent a variety of changes early in the series while the U.S. Mint ironed out the kinks of its newly-downsized penny. This inaugural 1859 Indian Head cent stands apart from the rest of the series for both its nickel composition and the laurel-wreath reverse engraving only used that year. Well-preserved Very Fine quality.
