This short-lived and long-obsolete coin was the first piece of U.S. coinage to bear the inscription of IN GOD WE TRUST. Because of coin shortages during the Civil War, the copper two-cent piece was introduced in 1864. As the conflict's terrible toll had contributed to increased religious sentiment, the addition of the new motto was intended to help sustain the country's morale. Very Fine quality.
