This peculiar pair of coins was struck during the American Civil War. The years-long conflict caused silver, gold and copper coins to all but disappear from circulation. The bronze two-cent coin is noteworthy for the first appearance of the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST and for its brief minting span that output a total of just 46 million pieces. In place of the vanished silver trime, the U.S. Mint issued a copper-nickel three-cent piece that was convenient for purchasing postage. Both of these odd denominations circulated heavily in the aftermath of the war, leaving comparatively few available in collectible condition today. Good quality.
