The Morgan dollar's reverse underwent several design changes in its first year of issue, resulting in a number of collectible varieties. San Francisco received a number of the leftover 1878 reverse dies which were used the following year in 1879. An unknown number of each type were produced, however experts estimate that less than one third of the year's total mintage of 9,110,000 was of the second reverse. The 1879-S second and third reverse types went largely unnoticed by collectors until the 1960s, but today both varieties are considered a necessary component of any comprehensive Morgan collection.
