Many Melted – In both 1880 and 1882, the Philadelphia Mint produced the lion's share of the year's Morgans, striking 12.6 million and 11.1 million respectively. As the principal mint and its branches churned out huge numbers of big silver dollars during the 1880s, large portions of many of the decade's issues landed in storage and would later be melted. After melts, attrition and the passage of 14 decades, about 2% of each of the 1880 and 1882's original mintages may be extant in mint-state grades. This puts added collecting pressure on Very Fine specimens such as these.
