1880-P Morgan Silver Dollar Very Fine

Issued just two years after the Morgan silver dollar's introduction in 1878, the 1880 Philadelphia Morgan had relatively high mintage of 12.6 million. But today it's a relative scarcity. The reason is that tremendous numbers were lost in later U.S. government melts during the world wars - hugely disproportionate to the other mint's issues of the day. Although fewer Morgans were struck at San Francisco in 1880, those massive melts have made the Philadelphia issue much scarcer today. In nicely detailed Very Fine quality or better, over five times as many 1880-S Morgans survive as no-mintmark Morgans of the principal Philadelphia Mint.
