In both 1888 and 1890, the Philadelphia Mint struck the lion's share of that year's Morgan dollars – an impressive 19.2 million and 16.8 million coins respectively. But with more than enough silver dollars already in circulation, huge quantities were packed away in vaults… only to meet their fate decades later in the government's melting pot. Today, experts estimate that fewer than 3% of either date survive in mint-state condition.
