Product Description
1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary Silver Half Dollar, This early 90% silver U.S. commemorative was struck for the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrim landing at Plymouth Rock. Just over 150,000 were issued in 1920 featuring no date on the obverse. Shown is Governor Bradford holding the Holy Book and the Mayflower in full sail. A small letter D found under Bradford's elbow might be mistaken for Denver's mintmark, but it's actually the initial of the sculptor, Cyrus Dallin. In fact, all 1920 Pilgrim halves were struck in Philadelphia. Extra Fine quality.
1926 Sesquicentennial of American Independence Silver Half Dollar, Did you know that the appearance of Silent Cal on this commemorative silver half dollar was technically illegal? When this coin was minted in 1926 to honor the 150th anniversary of American Independence, it featured Washington and Coolidge, linking past to present. Trouble was, decades before this coin was struck, Congress ruled that no living person could appear on U.S. currency... but Calvin Coolidge could be found sitting in the White House — not six feet under! The Liberty Bell on the reverse was later adapted for the Franklin half dollar. Sharply detailed Extra Fine condition.
