Because a glut of silver dollars had been struck the year before, a large portion of 1923's output from all three mints – Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco – did not enter circulation and instead were held in reserve. But during WWII many silver dollars vanished in the government's melting pot; today it's estimated that just 9% of Philadelphia's original mintage and less than 1% of each Denver and San Fran's issues survive in mint-state condition, which puts added collecting pressure on circulated specimens, like these sharply detailed XF coins.
