A surge in popularity led to the peak issuance of commemorative coins in 1936 — 16 different events across the nation were celebrated. Among the many souvenir coins output in 1936 was this silver half dollar that marked Long Island's 300th anniversary of a Dutch settlement in Jamaica Bay. Designed by the son of A.A. Weinman, the obverse depicts jugate busts of two men; a Dutch colonist and a Native American. A Dutch ship in full sail appears on the reverse. Extra Fine quality.
