Crammed full of dates and inscriptions, this busy coin celebrates the transformation of Norfolk, Virgina from township to borough, to city. While 25,000 were authorized, less than 17,000 were actually sold, most likely due to the plethora of commemorative coins that had already been issued in 1936. The half dollar was designed by husband and wife sculptors, William and Marjorie Simpson. A replica of the Norfolk City Seal graces the obverse; while the reverse depicts the Royal Mace of Norfolk. Intricate lettering is showcased by the Brilliant Uncirculated condition of these lustrous specimens.
