During WWII, copper destined for U.S. coinage was instead diverted to the war effort. In 1943, the mint issued a pioneering steel cent, but its composition created problems in commerce. Pennies struck from 1944 to 1946 were minted with copper retrieved from recycled shell casings. You'll get an example of each date in Very Fine condition.
