U.S. 1978-S Final Year of Issue Eisenhower Dollar Proof. The Ike dollar series only ran from 1971 to 1978. Just 3.1 million coins were issued by the San Francisco Mint in 1978 as finest-quality proofs and they were originally part of the year's proof sets. Sets had to be broken up to obtain these proofs featuring deep-struck engravings and mirror surfaces.
