Since 1992, the U.S. Mint has issued special silver proof sets annually in addition to regular base-metal proof sets, reviving the tradition of 90% silver dimes, quarters and half dollars. These much scarcer, 5-coin 1996 and 1997 silver sets have mintages of just 623,655 and 605,473 respectively. Thats only about one-third of the production of regular proof sets for those years. Each coin features finest quality proof minting with crisp, double-struck engravings and dazzling mirror backgrounds.
