About Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site:
- Due to segregation laws still in effect in the United States, African Americans were barred from military aviation before 1940. Pressure from the NCAAP resulted in the selection of six colleges and universities that would begin enrolling African Americans in the Civilian Pilot Training Programs (CPTP).
- The most famed and elite CPTP training took place at Alabama's Tuskegee Institute. Today, five historic structures have been preserved to commemorate the historic achievements and heroism of the Tuskegee Airmen.
- During World War II, courageous Tuskegee Airmen undertook over 1,500 combat missions, nearly 200 bomber escort missions, destroyed numerous enemy aircraft and even destroyed a torpedo boat.
