Following the transplant, the patient lived for almost three weeks before succumbing to renal failure. However, the achievement was undeniable and that initial procedure opened the way for exciting developments in human lung transplantation, and began a new era of therapy for lung disease in humans.

On the reverse is a pair of human lungs and gloved hands passing forceps. Edge incused date and mintmark. Philadelphia and Denver pair in Brilliant Uncirculated quality.
