Authorized by Congress for the spectacular 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, this historic 90% silver half dollar bears the first commemorative coin design in U.S. history. The obverse presents a portrait of Columbus, while the reverse depicts the Santa Maria flagship modeled on a replica that sailed from Spain to America for the Exposition. The Old and New World hemispheres below echo the famous design of America's first silver dollar used in the original thirteen colonies.
