On the homefront, it was all hands on deck — even the U.S. Mint contributed to the war effort! Copper was a crucial metal needed for munitions during World War II, so the Treasury diverted its supplies and instead authorized the issuance of battleship-gray steel cents in 1943. Their different weight caused problems in coin machines and they were replaced in 1944 with copper retrieved from casings of fired bullets and artillery shells.
