Where did the symbol for the U.S. dollar actually come from? Perhaps, as some historians suggest, its origins could be traced to the large S found on this European 1/108 silver thaler, struck during the 1587-1663 reign of Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland. After all, our word for "dollar" was derived from the German thaler, a 16th century silver trade coin.
