This big copper weighs almost four times as much as later small cents. Early U.S. Mint cents were modeled on big British copper pennies of the day. That's why they were called pennies, a name that stuck even though their official denomination was always cent. They were often nailed to new homes as good luck charms. Our Good quality retains basic designs. Our choice of date.
