This all-copper half cent could purchase a good number of items in its day and was convenient in making change for the Spanish-American reale, which retained legal-tender status in the United States as a 12 1/2 cent coin. Much bigger than today's cent and even larger than our current nickel, 1849-1857 half cents had very limited mintages ranging from 35,180 to 147,672 per year. Fine quality. Our choice of date.
