Authorized by Congress for the spectacular 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, this historic U.S. silver half dollar bears the first commemorative coin designs in U.S. history. The obverse presents U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber's sculpted portrait of Columbus, based on a statue in Madrid. The reverse by George T. Morgan (of Morgan dollar fame) depicts the Santa Maria flagship, modeled on a replica that sailed from Spain to America in 1892 and appeared at the Columbian Exposition. The Old and New World hemispheres below echo the famous design of America's first silver dollar, used in the 13 Colonies and early U.S. We offer the 1893 date sold at a premium at the Columbian Exposition comparatively few survive in our nicely detailed Very Fine quality.
