U.S. federal currency began during the Civil War and this favorite 1899 horseblanket note brought Lincoln and Grant back together again in small cameos adorned by laurel. Above, a vigorous black eagle defends American traditions, with Capitol Hill shown in the background. Unlike Civil War currency, this $1 silver certificate promised redemption in hard-asset silver coins. The ship's wheel of the reverse has a classic American look with highly intricate butterfly weaving on the borders. The note's horseblanket 7 1/4 inch by 3 inch size is much larger than modern U.S. currency. Very Good quality.
