The U.S. Mint engraver John Mercanti captured the rugged magnificence of the famous presidential monument on the 50th anniversary of the Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. Below the massive mountain sculptures of presidents Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Lincoln are laurel branches honoring America's attainments. On the reverse is Robert Lamb's encircled Presidential Seal superimposed on a map of the United States of America, with the inscription "Shrine of Democracy." Its finest-quality proof mintage was just 12% of the 1986 "Statue of Liberty" silver dollar proof.
