Struck for 50 years, the Indian Head cent began circulating under the shadow of impending Civil War and continued on through the Reconstruction era, the second industrial age and into the Progressive era. With great buying power in their day, most withstood heavy circulation and very few were saved. Early Indian Head issues were composed of copper-nickel; their lighter coloration earned the coin its moniker of "white cent." Our 1863 specimens represent the final full year of white cents; midway through the 1864 the composition would be changed to bronze. Well-traveled Good quality with clear date and major design elements visible.
