Modeled after the big British copper pennies, the Flying Eagle was the first small cent used in American commerce and set the standard for all future U.S. pennies. Only 17 million were minted in 1857, exclusively by the Philadelphia Mint — about one for every two Americans then living. The design's high relief led to minting problems and after only two years, the Flying Eagle was replaced by the Indian Head cent. Good quality. Our choice of 1857 or 1858 date.
