Did you know there was a small cent issued before the Indian Head series? The Flying Eagle cent replaced large copper pennies and became the first 19 millimeter cent coin used in American commerce. They set the size standard for all future U.S. pennies. It was also the nation's first copper nickel coin, known as a "white cent" or "nick." The Flying Eagle's spectacular high relief engraving was quickly retired after just two years, due to minting problems. The antebellum reverse entwined the North's corn and wheat and the South's cotton and tobacco. Good quality. Our choice of 1858 type variation.
