When the Indian Head penny was first introduced in 1859, it was colloquially known as a "nickel" or "white cent" because its copper-nickel composition gave the coin a light coloration. We offer a pair of 1862 and 1863 Civil War-era specimens, struck during the same years that two of the most significant battles occurred – Antietam and Gettysburg. Partway through 1864, the final white cents were minted and replaced by a bronze version. Good quality.
