This pair of historic 1864 Indian Head cents represent a transitional year that occurred at the height of the Civil War. Due in part to minting difficulties as well as the war-related need for nickel, in 1864 the U.S. Mint struck its final copper-nickel Indian Head cent, opting to revamp its production in a bronze alloy. Comprised of 95% copper, this new form would remain the standard for U.S. cents until 1982. After surviving the war, escaping melts and general attrition, nearly 160 years after they were first issued these Good quality specimens still retain basic designs with clear dates and inscriptions.
