These 1865, 1866, and 1867 3¢ nickels comprise the first three years of the classic series. The odd (and oddly crucial) 3¢ denomination experienced a metamorphosis with the introduction of this copper-nickel piece. Initially a silver coin, it was produced to purchase 3¢ postage stamps, but had become scarce due to hoarding of precious metals during the Civil War. Thus, the 3¢ nickel was born. In total, only 32 million were produced with one of the prettiest engravings of Liberty. Many were heavily circulated and destroyed after recall, leaving comparatively few today, especially in the Very Fine quality offered here.
