The obverse of this copper nickel coin features a Liberty cap. Many nations in Latin America, including Colombia, integrated the cap into their national iconography to celebrate their successful struggle for independence from European colonial rule. The cap is shown on a pole, as there was a common 18th-century revolutionary practice of raising a cap in public squares to signal a rally for freedom. The reverse of these Fine quality specimens displays the denomination "2½" and the year "1881."
