1883 Liberty Head Nickel No Cents Very Fine

The new Liberty Head nickel struck in 1883 declared its face value with a large Roman numeral V. This presented a fortuitous opportunity for flimflammers: a portion were promptly gold-plated and passed off as $5 gold pieces. When the Mint caught wind of the hustle, a second type was re-issued with the word CENTS added. This first "cents-less" type circulated briefly and remains in nicely detailed Very Fine quality.
