With silver still pouring out of Western mines, in the final year of the 1880s the Philadelphia Mint would produce a massive horde of Morgans — over 21.7 million — but with bountiful numbers already in circulation, most of the mother mint's output was placed into storage vaults. As a whole, the Morgan series would suffer great losses in government melts during the war years. Although Philadelphia minted the lion's share of Morgans in 1889, many met their fate in the melting pot, leaving an estimated 2% of the original output in mint-state condition; and of those, an even smaller portion make the cut and receive certified grades, like the MS-64 specimen offered here.
