Of all the classic commemorative coins issued by the U.S. Mint from 1892 to 1954, the 1900 Lafayette silver dollar represented the only one of its denomination and was also the first legal tender coin to feature a past president. Depicting jugate busts of George Washington and General Lafayette, 50,000 coins were minted to raise funds to erect a monument of Lafayette in Paris on behalf of the American people. Sales of the silver dollar fell short and a good chunk were melted, resulting in a surviving mintage of only 36,026 pieces. The reverse engraving of this sought-after coin portrays Layfayette on horseback. Sharply detailed Extra Fine condition.
