Product Description
There probably isn't a more fascinating variety in the Morgan dollar series than this unique double-mintmarked scarcity. We very rarely are able to offer this issue as specimens are always tough to find in the marketplace. The Carson City Mint in Nevada closed suddenly in 1893 after a scandalous theft by some of its employees. Seven years later the branch mint remained closed and mint officials decided to send a few of its unused CC reverse dies to the principal Philadelphia Mint. The plan was to remove the CC mintmarks and use them to strike a limited number of Morgans. However, it's known that at least six of these dies were only partially effaced — and then ended up being punched with an O (New Orleans) mintmark over their still-visible CC! The double-mintmark can be challenging to see with the naked eye (a good magnifier is recommended). Guaranteed Extra Fine specimen shows faint ghost marks of the CC on one or both sides of the O.
