Everyone loves the Buffalo nickel, but few collectors are aware of the fact that the U.S. Mint had a major problem with the original engraving. The first 1913 issue was quickly recalled because the raised mound below the buffalo created stacking problems in banks. In that same year, a second type which replaced the relief effect below the buffalo with a flat line, was output at all three U.S. mints. These Very Fine quality 1913 Philadelphia Type II Buffalo nickels have clear designs and show the change to the engraving distinctly.
