The 1913-S is the lowest mintage of the three Type I Buffalo nickels. This great classic coin design was an immediate hit with the American public, but banks soon complained that the relief of the mound below the buffalo created stacking problems. The engraving was quickly revised. This early type is vastly scarcer than the second 1913-1938 type, which replaced the raised area with a flat line.
