Under the Pittman Act of 1918, nearly 300 million Morgans had been melted and sold to Britain in bullion form during World War I. After the war, a provision of the Act authorized the minting of silver dollars equal to what was melted... but the Morgan hubs had been destroyed when the series was suspended after 1904. Therefore, the resulting 1921 silver dollars are unique to the series.
