These 1968 and 1969 Canadian six-coin proof-like uncirculated mint sets feature Canada's first nickel-based coinage. This change was prompted by the rapidly rising market price of silver which made it too expensive for the Royal Canadian Mint to continue producing circulation coins with precious metal. The cost of producing silver coins was exceeding their face value, leading to a permanent switch to cheaper, durable nickel alloys. Housed in original Royal Canadian Mint packaging, each set includes the Voyageur dollar, Coat of Arms half dollar, Caribou quarter, the Bluenose schooner dime, Beaver nickel and Maple Leaf cent. Our choice of 1968 or 1969 date.
