The 1965 Canadian penny is of interest to collectors for a few reasons. This was the first year that the obverse of the cent featured the more mature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which replaced the previous "youthful" likeness used from 1953 to 1964. The reverse engraving carries the iconic maple leaf twig design, which was standard for Canadian pennies from 1937 until they were discontinued in 2012. The 1965 issue also comes in several varieties based on bead size and the shape of the numeral 5. Our specimens are likely small beads with a pointed five in BU grade.
