Due to its strength, nickel was a crucial metal diverted to armament production during WWII. Nickel was used for all manner of military equipment, even in the armor plating of the battleship USS Missouri, upon whose quarterdeck the Japanese would eventually surrender. Wartime 5¢ pieces were struck from 1942 until 1945 sans nickel, instead composed of copper, silver and manganese. To distinguish them from regular issues, the reverse of these silver alloy nickels bore large P, D and S mintmarks. Housed in a custom display case, you will receive a complete set of 11 wartime silver-alloy issues from Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco in circulated condition. Holder may vary from shown.
