Defaced British 1797 George III Halfpenny Circ

This British halfpenny was struck in the late 18th century, during the reign of King George III, the tyrant to whom the American Founders addressed the Declaration of Independence. The obverse of the coin had a portrait of the king. Not that you can see it. So loathed was mad King George III that people defaced — literally removed his face from these coins in a variety of creative ways. This defacement is a physical testament to the contempt the public had for him.
