These Palembang Pitis coin were minted in Sumatra, Indonesia, from the late 1600s to the early 1800s. The small, cast coins were produced by the an influential Islamic state, Palembang Sultanate which was a major maritime and trading power. These tin or copper/bronze alloy coins circulated through the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest and most pirate-infested trade routes in human history.
